Instagram Stories’ Biggest Update: URLs, Mentions, and Boomerang

Not one, not two, but three new features have arrived to Instagram Stories.

It looks like all the social media giants are trying to one-up each other.

Let’s get into the first big update. Instagram is allowing users to add URL links to their stories. Viewers can tap a button and be automatically taken to the website with the provided link. Instead of having the link visible in the story and cluttering the screen with text, there will be a “See More” button at the bottom of the screen that will contain the link. The only downside to this feature is that it will only be available to verified Instagram accounts at launch. There goes my shot at self-promoting my YouTube videos. Unlike Instagram pictures, Instagram Stories will allow marketers with verified accounts to share links to further promote their company. With this feature, marketers can solve one of their biggest problems. How to drive viewers from social media to their website. If marketers can create eye-catching stories to include with their links, you can expect viewers to land on their website. This could even mean having links that will direct users to purchase pages to drive sales. Adding URLs is now giving marketers the power to create a call to action.

For all those unverified accounts that feel left out, here is an inclusive feature that will cheer you up. Instagram is letting you tag other Instagram users in your story through the Mentions feature. By tagging other users, you will see their username underlined and tappable in the story. When the username is tapped, the user will be taken to the tagged profile. With this power, marketers can use Stories to cross-promote their other accounts or business partners.

Finally, the last feature Instagram is launching to all users is the ability to use Boomerang in Stories. Instead of using the stand-alone Boomerang app to create one-second video loops, users can access the Boomerang mode in Instagram Stories. This will let users add more diverse and dynamic video content to their stories.

In tandem, these features are granting marketers more power to promote their company and interact with their audience through Instagram Stories. When used correctly, you can spark the interest of the audience and direct them to the Instagram accounts and URL links you desire. As a result, you are gaining more exposure and creating a call to action for users to take with your company.
